Boone Brux: To Catch Her Death (Grim Reality #1)

BBI love, love, love, love, love this book!! As a reader I am head over heels TEE-OAT-ALLY a Paranormal Romance FREAK!   When I’m not binging on J.R. Ward’s the Brothers or Angels, or totally engrossed in a Dark Hunter treat I’m always looking for something fresh.  And this Grim Reality series from Boone Brux is just what I crave.

This grim reaper story starts totally sad with the recent widow/mom/homemaker, Lisa Carron.   All she wanted was a sugar fix from a yummy super delicious fountain drink at a local convenience store in ALASKA (brrrrr).  But no, her world gets flipped upside down when she witnesses a murder, then some freaky ghostness and a super hot grim reaper with a even hotter tush.  Then things get even weirder. You can really relate to Lisa, she’s not perfect, and life’s dealt her some harsh doses lately.

There were moments throughout the story that I awwwed, laughed and awwwwed again.  I don’t like to give away too much stuff but if you enjoy comedy, cuteness, and a dash of snark this won’t disappoint!

I was lucky to get a signed book from this super cool author while I was at Coastal Magic Con in Daytona Beach, Florida this past February.  To Catch Her Death was super easy/quick to read, the pages just flew by.  I can’t wait to read the next one, Styx & Stoned (Grim Reality #2) .

I have to add I love this cover too, the little touches of Grim here and there are perfect.

Seventeen-year-old Raine Cooper has enough on her plate dealing with her father’s disappearance, her mother’s erratic behavior and the possibility of her boyfriend relocating. The last thing she needs is Torin St. James—a mysterious new neighbor with a wicked smile and uncanny way of reading her.

Raine is drawn to Torin’s dark sexiness against her better judgment, until he saves her life with weird marks and she realizes he is different. But by healing her, Torin changes something inside Raine. Now she can’t stop thinking about him. Half the time, she’s not sure whether to fall into his arms or run.

Scared, she sets out to find out what Torin is. But the closer she gets to the truth the more she uncovers something sinister about him. What Torin is goes back to an ancient mythology and Raine is somehow part of it. Not only is she and her friends in danger, she must choose a side, but the wrong choice will cost Raine her life.

Blurb

Nothing can stop Raine Cooper when she wants something…

Raine finally knows that her gorgeous neighbor, Torin St. James, is a legend straight out of Norse mythology, and that her feelings for him are strong. Torin is crazy about Raine too, breaking the one rule he lives by: Never fall for a mortal. The problem is he no longer remembers her, his memories erased by Norns—Norse destiny deities—to punish her for defying them.

So Raine comes up with a plan…

She will make Torin forget his one rule a second time and fall in love with her all over again. But she quickly learns that well-laid plans do not work when dealing with deities and supernatural beings. Desperate, Raine makes choices that could not only tear her and Torin further apart, but lead to the destruction of everything and everyone she loves.

Grimnirs (Book 2.5)

Blurb

Straight out of the psyche ward, Cora just wants her life to be normal. She doesn’t want to see souls or the reapers collecting them. The love of her life, the guy she’s loved from a distance for years, has moved away without saying goodbye. So yes, she’s nursing a serious heartbreak. It’s no wonder love is the last thing on her mind when Echo storms into her life.

The chemistry between them is mind-blowing. The connection defies logic. It doesn’t help that Echo is the poster boy for everything she hates in a guy—hot, beautiful, and cocky. A general pain-in-the-butt. Being around him makes her feel more alive than she’s ever felt before. But more important, the souls leave her alone when he is around.

Echo is perfect for her. Echo might even be her soul-mate. There is only one problem. Echo is a freaking soul reaper. A Grimnir. The very beings she wants out of her life. Maybe normal is overrated because Cora wants it all. Answers. Love. A life. You see, once you fall for a Grimnir, your life will never be the same again.

Reality (The Life of Arie #1) by Dani Hart

REALITYBLURB:

I am Arie Belle and up until my mother’s unexpected and mysterious death my life had been pretty simple, but then things became dark and, at times, hopeless. Even my uncanny ability to communicate with nature had turned its back on me. My only saving grace is my lifetime friendship with the boy next door, River, whom I had always thought of as my soul mate up until my eighteenth birthday when everything seemed to change. My body tingles with heightened sensations and my emotions veer out of control. They are further tested when Ashe, a beautiful stranger with a powerful draw, enters my life and challenges my heart and soul. Amidst the rush of feelings after years of numbness, my true destiny slowly unravels and my journey to find out what I am, to find my mother’s killer, and stop my own death becomes a frantic rush before the next full moon.

This powerful story encaptures the true meaning of love and the dark corners of life that can either suck you in or save you.

MY REVIEW:

This was a great quick read for me, the story flowed very well and plot was very intriguing.  A lot of the story deals with Arie’s grief from the death of her mother, her unrelenting visions, and Arie learning she is not who she thought she was or quite sure what she is.  I can’t say too much because there is a big reveal at the end of the book.  The story is full of twists and turns and keeps you guessing and wondering about Arie and her family until the very end.  And even then there’s a lot left to learn.  Let us not forget about her best and life long friend, River, who is completely committed to Arie. Then there is Ashe, another possible love interest, I’m looking forward to learning more about him, hopefully in the next book; I can’t say I’m a fan of him yet.  You could say I’m Team River at this point.  There is some sexual content in Reality.  There is a good versus bad vibe to Reality which reminded me of Lauren Kate’s Fallen series.  I have to add that I love the artwork on the cover of Reality.  It’s beautiful and mysterious.  I’m really looking forward to the next installment in this series.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

  • What was your inspiration for writing Reality?
  • I love fiction and especially creating unique stories and worlds. I adore mythical fairy tales, so I knew I wanted Arie’s world to revolve around that feel.
  • What are you currently reading and can you share a few favorite authors?
  • Unfortunately, I don’t have any time for reading anymore, but my favorite most recent reads (which was a while ago) were the Twilight series, Hunger Games series, The Sookie Stackhouse series, and The Mageri series.
  • What actors/actresses could you envision playing Arie, Ashe, River, and Star?
  • Oh goodness! I rarely watch TV and I don’t follow the modeling world, so I am actually going to be running a fun contest in November for my fans to vote on who they think the character cast should be.
  • Can you tell us any projects you are currently working on?
  • Book 2 in The Life of Arie series and a dark romance called A Firefighter’s Flame.
  • Do you have any advice for newbie writers?
  • LOL! I am a “newbie” writer in the sense that this is my first attempt at publishing, so that’s a tough question. I would say that if you love writing then practice and research your craft! I was fortunate that I always knew I wanted to write, so I got my degree in Theatre with an emphasis on creative and screenwriting at USC. I didn’t stop there, though. I went to UCLA extension for more writing courses. The one thing that I held onto the most is that the more organically you let a story flow through you the more naturally it will develop. And to always write even if you think you’re stuck! Just write anything, even if it’s just about what you did that day and how it made you feel. Your mind works in mysterious ways and the smallest things can get your imagination flowing again.
  • It was a pleasure to read Reality and thank you so much for the interview Dani. The contest for the fans sounds like a great idea and should be very interesting! I know I have some opinions for the actor/actresses.

DANI HARTABOUT THE AUTHOR:

I love reading and have my sister-in-law to thank for all the great finds! She’s deep into romance and supernatural and always sends the good stuff my way. I guess you can say she’s my reviewer/filter! Why supernatural for me? I don’t do reality. Let’s face it, we are surrounded by reality every day and I don’t need to immerse myself into it while reading too! I want the suspension of disbelief! I want to be taken somewhere else and know that it’s not real and is all in fun!

I received my bachelor’s at USC in theatre with an unofficial minor in writing and I am currently in a post-graduate program at CSUCI working on my Math credential. And, yes, I did just say Math! Crazy, I know! Exhausting too! Only 1 more year until I can officially teach!

My passions include reading and especially writing. Growing up I was the child in the corner reading alone like a little hermit. I guess they label it as anti-social these days. I also grew up writing in diaries, then poetry, then short stories. While at USC I wrote my first screenplay and post-graduation I was hired to write another screenplay, which I did successfully. I have since started several books, but have never had the courage or time to finish. That’s changing as of now! I missed it, but I had convinced myself I was too busy and it would be a waste of time. Really, I was just discouraged from my years in the industry and I was scared to go back. Then I started reading again and it sparked my passion and true calling. I started writing a story that had been brewing inside of me over the years. The characters were slowly developing and itching to break out onto paper. In the summer of 2011 I wrote the first chapter and started the second chapter. Then life got busy again and my passion was pushed aside. Sad right? Then I met an amazing person who loved my story and encouraged me to start writing again. With that said, I am in a happier place now. I am fulfilling my inner desire and passion to write while raising a family and living life. Thank you so much for your support! And I hope to keep the stories coming!!!

Review: Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon

18386252

BLURB:

Centuries ago Acheron saved the human race by imprisoning an ancient evil bent on absolute destruction. Now that evil has been unleashed and it is out for revenge.

As the twin to Acheron, Styxx hasn’t always been on his brother’s side. They’ve spent more centuries going at each other’s throats than protecting their backs. Now Styxx has a chance to prove his loyalty to his brother, but only if he’s willing to trade his life and future for Acheron’s.

The Atlantean goddess of Wrath and Misery, Bethany was born to right wrongs. But it was never a task she relished. Until now. She owes Acheron a debt that she vows to repay, no matter what it takes. He will join their fellow gods in hell and nothing is going to stop her.

But things are never what they seem, and Acheron is no longer the last of his line. Styxx and Acheron must put aside their past and learn to trust each other or more will suffer.

Yet it’s hard to risk your own life for someone who once tried to take yours, even when it’s your own twin, and when loyalties are skewed and no one can be trusted, not even yourself, how do you find a way back from the darkness that wants to consume the entire world? One that wants to start by devouring your very soul?

OUR REVIEW:

The highly anticipated Styxx is finally here. I wanted to read this latest Dark Hunter installment because I absolutely love the series but I didn’t want to read it because I didn’t want my opinion of Ash changed in any way. I think it is  safe to say I started reading with a slightly jaded view.

I am going to sound like Ash here for a moment when I say I know there are always two sides to every story and you have to hear both sides before you make up your mind but I have loved Ash for so long it was difficult to give Styxx the benefit of the doubt before reading his story.

Ms. Kenyon is a wonderful story teller and really gets the reader wrapped up in her characters lives and we really feel for them. Having now read Styxx’s side of the story, I am not quite as anti-Styxx as I was but I will always put Ash first. This book gives a lot of back story and answers many questions. I like how Ms. Kenyon weaves multiple storylines in her books and Styxx definitely gave us that to keep our interests. And she leaves us with just enough of a teaser to make us wait impatiently for the next Dark Hunter installment.

In the end, I no longer hate Styxx but I don’t necessarily have to like him even though he is a likable person. I did enjoy this book and am glad that I read it. You don’t have to be a Dark Hunter fan to to read this either.  I do suggest you at least read Acheron either before or after this one to get the complete picture.
