Boone Brux: To Catch Her Death (Grim Reality #1)

BBI love, love, love, love, love this book!! As a reader I am head over heels TEE-OAT-ALLY a Paranormal Romance FREAK!   When I’m not binging on J.R. Ward’s the Brothers or Angels, or totally engrossed in a Dark Hunter treat I’m always looking for something fresh.  And this Grim Reality series from Boone Brux is just what I crave.

This grim reaper story starts totally sad with the recent widow/mom/homemaker, Lisa Carron.   All she wanted was a sugar fix from a yummy super delicious fountain drink at a local convenience store in ALASKA (brrrrr).  But no, her world gets flipped upside down when she witnesses a murder, then some freaky ghostness and a super hot grim reaper with a even hotter tush.  Then things get even weirder. You can really relate to Lisa, she’s not perfect, and life’s dealt her some harsh doses lately.

There were moments throughout the story that I awwwed, laughed and awwwwed again.  I don’t like to give away too much stuff but if you enjoy comedy, cuteness, and a dash of snark this won’t disappoint!

I was lucky to get a signed book from this super cool author while I was at Coastal Magic Con in Daytona Beach, Florida this past February.  To Catch Her Death was super easy/quick to read, the pages just flew by.  I can’t wait to read the next one, Styx & Stoned (Grim Reality #2) .

I have to add I love this cover too, the little touches of Grim here and there are perfect.

Devious Minds

(A Shelby Nichols Adventure Series #8)

by Colleen Helme

Blurb:

It’s been almost a year since a near-fatal gunshot wound left Shelby Nichols with the ability to read minds. In that time she’s faced one problem after another. She’s been shot at, framed for murder, and targeted by a serial killer, just to name a few. Now she’s trying to help her lawyer husband win a murder trial that will enable him to become a partner in his law firm. Sounds easy, right? But nothing ever goes as planned when it comes to Shelby Nichols.

When special agent, Blake Beauchaine, shows up to collect a debt from Shelby, things get even more complicated, and Shelby is soon on her way to Paris. A routine meeting with a rogue agent reveals a sinister plot, putting Shelby into the cross-hairs of a known terrorist. Even worse, she doesn’t speak French, so it seems her mind-reading abilities won’t help her this time.

Things go from bad to downright dangerous for Shelby, especially since her usual guardians, Uncle Joey, and his hit-man, Ramos, are back in the states. Lost and on her own in the streets of Paris, can Shelby escape the cold-blooded killer in time to stop his devious plans, or will this be the end of the line for Shelby Nichols?

Excerpt

My mouth watered at the thought of chocolate, and I eagerly followed him into another maze of buildings and cobbled streets. We passed a few outdoor cafés before Blake stopped at the one he wanted. We sat outside, even though it wasn’t real warm, and ordered lunch. My order of a buckwheat galette filled with ham, cheese, tomatoes and mushrooms seemed to melt in my mouth.

After finishing up and, after a quick restroom break, we left for the chocolate store. On the way, we passed the real, honest-to-goodness, Louis Vuitton shop. I swallowed and glanced inside at all those expensive and non-knock-off handbags. Blake slowed down and studied me. He was thinking I had that glazed look of a woman just about to spend more money on a purse than it was worth.

That settled me down some, and I snapped my mouth shut. Letting out a breath, I caught up with him. He shook his head at me, and I only looked back once before we continued on. Several twists and turns later, we came upon another shop with a sign above it that read “Henri Le Roux Chocolatier et Caramélier.”

I understood the chocolatier part pretty fast and eagerly stepped inside. All the chocolates were displayed behind the glass case just like jewelry in a jewelry store, and I took my time looking at them all. A young woman came out to help us, and Blake spoke to her in French, so I didn’t know what they said. She got out a box and wrapped it up, then handed it to him.

“For you madam?” she asked.

“I don’t know,” I admitted.

“What do you like?”

“Chocolate covered marshmallows,” I replied.

“Ah… I have just the thing.” She left and came back with a circular shaped plastic container with lots of square chocolates inside. “These are chocolate outside, and inside is a tender cocoa marshmallow heart. You will love it.”

“Oh, thank you… uh… merci beaucoup… très bien!”

“De rien,” she said with a smile.

While Blake paid for the chocolates, I couldn’t wait to try a piece and opened the container. I pulled out a square and carefully placed it on my tongue, then closed my mouth around it. As the chocolate flavor burst along my taste buds, I tried not to moan, but I did anyway. Next came the sweet marshmallow center, which sort of melted in my mouth. It was the most perfect chocolate-covered marshmallow I’d ever tasted in my life.

“Come on, Shelby.” Blake steered me out of the shop and checked his watch. “We have just enough time to see the Eiffel Tower, but we’ll have to take the metro. There’s a station this way.”

I followed him in a daze. I didn’t know if it was the jet lag finally catching up, or the excitement of being in Paris, or all of that chocolatey goodness. I only knew that if magic existed, this was how it felt. We came to a stairway with a railing around it and a metro sign posted above. Several kiosks lined the wall at the bottom of the stairs. Blake inserted his credit card into a kiosk and tapped on the screen until several tickets came out. He handed me half of them.

“Keep these for later.”

INTO THE FIRE

Cedar McLeod would like nothing more than to return to Tír na nÓg, help rebuild the mythical kingdom, and start a new life for herself and her daughter, Eden. But peace is isn’t what Cedar finds after being reunited with her little girl.

Nuala—who kidnapped and terrorized Eden in her previous bid for power—has returned and is making a persuasive claim for the vacant throne. The devastation such a ruler would bring upon both the kingdom and the human world is unthinkable. With no one else to stake a convincing counter-claim, Cedar steps forward . . . but first she must prove her worth beyond a doubt.

Her opportunity comes when she is charged with finding an ancient treasure, the Stone of Destiny, and returning it to its rightful home. It is a quest that will lead her to question her beliefs, and push her loyalties to their limits. If she succeeds, Cedar could grant her new world and her new family a chance to flourish again. If not . . . destruction may be the only path ahead.

Into the Fire, the second book in the Thin Veil series, is a captivating blend of Celtic myth, mystery, and adventure that delves deeper into the ancient world first explored in Through the Door.

THROUGH THE DOOR:

Blurb:
It’s been seven years since the love of Cedar McLeod’s life left with no forwarding address. All she has left of him are heart-wrenching memories of happier times and a beautiful six-year-old daughter, Eden. Then, one day, Eden opens her bedroom door and unwittingly creates a portal that leads to anywhere she imagines.

But they’re not the only ones who know of Eden’s gift, and soon the child mysteriously vanishes.

Desperate for answers, Cedar digs into the past and finds herself thrust into a magical world of Celtic myths, fantastical creatures, and bloody rivalries. Teaming up with the unlikeliest of allies, Cedar must bridge the gap between two worlds and hold tight to the love in her heart…or lose everything to an ancient evil.

The first in the Thin Veil series, Through the Door is a pulse-pounding adventure that takes readers across the globe and deep into the hidden realms of Celtic lore.

MY REVIEWS

THROUGH THE DOOR:

First I have to remark what a beautiful cover this is, just stunning!  Personally, I have always been interested in anything Celtic related so I was anxious to find out how this story played out.  Through the Door did a perfect job of combining myths of Tir na nog, and ancient druid magic.

Through the Door was a powerful story, it gripped me from the first chapter. The vivid scenes from the “portals” that the child, Eden, created were fascinating.  The struggle of Cedar, trying to comprehend this new world of magic she never knew existed, the many betrayals and deceit from loved ones; all that would probably drive me crazy.  But Cedar is a strong female and she will do anything to find her daughter.   I won’t say who captured Eden, but I sure would like to slap that selfish SOB into the netherworld!

I also loved the mystery surrounding Finn, Cedar’s lost love.  It killed me waiting to find out anything I could about him and his sudden disappearance.

Through the Door also involves mermaids and leprechauns which I absolutely adore it when authors combine more than one type of “fae species” in a story.

Not everyone in Through the Door gets their HEA – but that’s what makes it so interesting with the many plot twists in the story.  It left me guessing till the very end exactly who would win this good versus evil tug of war.

INTO THE FIRE:

Again another gorgeous cover, absolutely love it!  The story picks up where it left off in Through The Door.  In Into the Fire we learn more about Cedar’s friend Jane, and a lot more about Finn’s family and friends.  We also get to know a very interesting new character named Liam, who gives some in site about Maeve.

It’s very interesting to watch Cedar’s daughter, Eden, grow into her powers.  She’s strong and yet vulnerable at the same time due to her age.

In Into the Fire, Cedar is put to an impossible task by the council in Tir na nog.  And of course Nuala is right there to foil everything.

Into the Fire was as intense, adventurous, and mysterious as Through the Door.

Spotlight: Getting Rooted by Jamie Baywood

final book design

Getting Rooted in New Zealand book description:
Craving change and lacking logic, at 26, Jamie, a cute and quirky Californian, impulsively moves to New Zealand to avoid dating after reading that the country’s population has 100,000 fewer men. In her journal, she captures a hysterically honest look at herself, her past and her new wonderfully weird world filled with curious characters and slapstick situations in unbelievably bizarre jobs. It takes a zany jaunt to the end of the Earth and a serendipitous meeting with a fellow traveler before Jamie learns what it really means to get rooted.

About the author Jamie Baywood:me with red hat

Jamie Baywood grew up in Petaluma, California. In 2010, she made the most impulsive decision of her life by moving to New Zealand. Getting Rooted in New Zealand is her first book about her experiences living there. Jamie is now married and living happily ever after in the United Kingdom. She is working on her second book.

REVIEWS:

“Getting Rooted In New Zealand is a diary of a California girl’s introduction to a completely different life experience in a new country and never has the phrase `stranger in a strange land’ been more relevant than in reading her intriguing and often insightful diary entries! Her observations about both culture and language are a wonderful mix of observation about one person’s reaction to the differences that make up the wonderful human race and the minutiae of daily living. I’ll be looking forward to seeing if Jamie produces another book about her experiences of coming to live in the UK.” (4 out of 5 stars) Linda Parkinson-Hardman (Amazon Customer Reviews)

“I’ve got this book and finished read it all so quickly, because I couldn’t stop reading it. it’s just so hilarious!! I can’t wait to read her next book. I highly recommend to read this book for everybody. I absolutely loved it!!” (5 out of 5 stars) S Halls (Amazon Customer Reviews)

“This book is perfect for travel-reading! It’s light, in small sections (as a diary), totally hilarious and also quite amazing. So many crazy experiences Jamie Baywood had in one year, some wonderful and some truly horrific, all taken together adds up to fruitful reading indeed. This book is like a rough diamond – I look forward to reading future novels as Jamie becomes more and more polished through life’s experiences” (5 out of 5 stars) Anna H(Amazon Customer Reviews)

“Giggle Worthy… It is difficult to write so openly about your life as you have and I found myself keenly reading to see what happened next. All your adventures with those crazy people sounded so dreadful, but provided such amusement in the way you have represented them. You make no real judgment on any person and I can tell that while you respect them as humans, you don’t put up with bad behaviour, so that’s an inspiration in itself” (4 out of 5 stars.) O. Dale (Amazon Customer Reviews)

“As a New Zealander, I really enjoyed this book. It was funny, and a lot of the things about NZ are definitely true…. I live overseas, so I can understand that no one outside of New Zealand really gets our slang and sometimes our accent, so that part really spoke to me! However, at the same time it doesn’t paint a true picture of New Zealand, given that the author worked in terrible jobs, had visa restrictions, didn’t have a lot of money, and stayed in run-down housing. Auckland, while being the largest city, isn’t necessarily representative of NZ. Overall, I’d recommend this book” (4 out of 5 stars.) Mark (Amazon Customer Reviews)

“Honest Humour… A great read! Honestly and effortlessly humorous. I giggled lots and really felt for Jamie at her times of struggle. Thank You for sharing so openly your experiences, obstacles and breakthroughs” (5 out of 5 stars.) Sparkles (Amazon Customer Reviews)

“Really enjoyed this book, I have to say. It was funny, quirky, even weird in places, but always entertaining. Having lived in New Zealand myself, I can definitely relate to some of Jamie’s experiences as a foreigner. Love NZ and love this book – highly recommended!” (5 out of 5 stars.) Polak (Amazon Customer Reviews).

“Fantastic, hilarious & Inspiring, I absolutely loved it. It is funny & absolutely honest. Very inspiring as it really draws reader’s attention to read more and more. I can’t wait now for her 2nd novel to come out. A movie should be made on “Getting Rooted in New Zealand”. Definitely will be a super hit “(5 out of 5 stars.) A-dreamer (Amazon Customer Reviews)

“Must Read Book – Hilarious! A real page turner – like reading a very funny / interesting friend’s secret diary. Also a fascinating insight into life in New Zealand as seen through the eyes of a traveller. Jamie Baywood is the thinking man’s Bridget Jones—with an edge. Would make a hilarious movie – but until that comes out the book is a must” (5 out of 5 stars.) J. Hamilton (Amazon Customer Reviews)

“Getting Rooted in New Zealand is wonderful chain of events unfolding in the most unusual way leading to the most perfect new beginning… Loved it” (5 out of 5 stars.) Ruchi Vasisht (Amazon Customer Reviews)

“Just finished your book Jamie, superb read!!!! Had me laughing on every page!!! Looking forward to the next one!” Natalie

“Just finished reading the book. I loved all the hilarious characters in the office. Now I know where all the money goes that we pay Auckland Council. Ahhh !!! So many funny stories and lots of laughs, and most importantly it has warmth and humanity as you write from a Buddhist perspective. Look forward to reading book number two !” Greggo x

I am new to NZ from the states and I am loving the book – I’m also a mum, so it’s the perfect light read after a long day with my toddler. Many good laughs and feeling the sisterhood as the real NZ (versus my fantasy NZ) manifests itself…! Almost finished. Thank you for writing this…it’s so unassuming and funny and real. I will look for your second book. (Marika Pickett)
