Review: Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon

BLURB:

Centuries ago Acheron saved the human race by imprisoning an ancient evil bent on absolute destruction. Now that evil has been unleashed and it is out for revenge.

As the twin to Acheron, Styxx hasn’t always been on his brother’s side. They’ve spent more centuries going at each other’s throats than protecting their backs. Now Styxx has a chance to prove his loyalty to his brother, but only if he’s willing to trade his life and future for Acheron’s.

The Atlantean goddess of Wrath and Misery, Bethany was born to right wrongs. But it was never a task she relished. Until now. She owes Acheron a debt that she vows to repay, no matter what it takes. He will join their fellow gods in hell and nothing is going to stop her.

But things are never what they seem, and Acheron is no longer the last of his line. Styxx and Acheron must put aside their past and learn to trust each other or more will suffer.

Yet it’s hard to risk your own life for someone who once tried to take yours, even when it’s your own twin, and when loyalties are skewed and no one can be trusted, not even yourself, how do you find a way back from the darkness that wants to consume the entire world? One that wants to start by devouring your very soul?

OUR REVIEW:

The highly anticipated Styxx is finally here. I wanted to read this latest Dark Hunter installment because I absolutely love the series but I didn’t want to read it because I didn’t want my opinion of Ash changed in any way. I think it is  safe to say I started reading with a slightly jaded view.

I am going to sound like Ash here for a moment when I say I know there are always two sides to every story and you have to hear both sides before you make up your mind but I have loved Ash for so long it was difficult to give Styxx the benefit of the doubt before reading his story.

Ms. Kenyon is a wonderful story teller and really gets the reader wrapped up in her characters lives and we really feel for them. Having now read Styxx’s side of the story, I am not quite as anti-Styxx as I was but I will always put Ash first. This book gives a lot of back story and answers many questions. I like how Ms. Kenyon weaves multiple storylines in her books and Styxx definitely gave us that to keep our interests. And she leaves us with just enough of a teaser to make us wait impatiently for the next Dark Hunter installment.

In the end, I no longer hate Styxx but I don’t necessarily have to like him even though he is a likable person. I did enjoy this book and am glad that I read it. You don’t have to be a Dark Hunter fan to to read this either.  I do suggest you at least read Acheron either before or after this one to get the complete picture.

Stone Guardian by Danielle Monsch

SynopsisStoneGuardian25002

Gryphons flying past Skyscrapers? Wizards battling it out in coffeehouses? Women riding motorcycles with large swords strapped to their backs? All normal sights since the Great Collision happened twenty-six years ago.

Well, not normal for everyone. Larissa Miller may have been born after the Great Collision, but as a history teacher who lives in the human-only city, she has never come into contact with any other race or species. That is, until one day she walks out of her apartment only to be attacked by a mob of Zombies, but then is saved by a Gargoyle.

Leader of the Gargoyles, Terak has been watching over the human woman for months because of a cryptic prophecy. Gargoyles trust no one outside their Clan, but something about this woman stirs every protective instinct within him. When he realizes the danger to her is real, he refuses to allow her to explore this new world without him at her side.

In the course of their investigation Terak becomes entranced by his little human. But when he discovers why Necromancers want her and the great reward that awaits him if he betrays her, he must choose between the welfare of his Clan and not only Larissa’s life, but the fate of this new Realm as well.

Review

This is the first book that I have come across that is about gargolyes and I was really interested to see Ms. Monsch view of their world.

This book touches on social predjudice and has Larissa learning she was right in wanting to learn more about the world she lives in along with all the different species regardless of her father’s wishes. She listens to her inner voice that many of us tend to ignore.

Terak maybe be hundreds of years old, he is not stuck in old ways and traditions. He knows he needs to lead his clan into a new way of life, living among and with other species in peace.

There are trials that both Larissa and Terak must face in order to survive. Even though they are of differing species they are inexplicably drawn together and make an engaging team working together.

I was pleasantly pleased with this book and look forward to reading further publications from Ms. Monsch.

About the AuthorSONY DSC

Mia Hoddell lives in the UK with her family and two cats. She spends most of her time writing or reading and loves anything paranormal. Mia always had a love of writing but never reading. She was more interested in sports and hated sitting still – despite getting three poems published before the age of sixteen. Finally though, she found some novels that captured her interest and developed a love of reading which is now one of her favourite hobbies.

Mia began with poems before moving on to short stories. Although she enjoyed this, Mia found she had too much to tell with too little space, so later on she created her first series ‘The Wanderer Trilogy’ and from there other ideas have emerged. With a total of nine books planned at this moment, she is busy working on her second series ‘Elemental Killers’ before moving onto the next idea on her ever growing list.

Honeymoon To Die For by Dianna Love

105This is book three in the Slye Temp series.

SYNOPSIS:

Former Slye agent RYDER VAN DYKE is facing conviction for a murder he didn’t commit. When his last hope for freedom disintegrates, the FBI offers a deal – a commuted sentence if Ryder helps them nail a deadly criminal … his father.

FBI analyst BIANCA BRADY wants justice for the death of her best friend. Now all she needs is proof that the Van Dyke patriarch is guilty of funding terrorist operations. She’s willing to do whatever it takes to make Van Dyke criminals pay, or so she thinks.  But there’s a catch.
The only way to get an FBI agent inside the family compound and Van Dyke Enterprises is as Ryder’s legal wife. Ryder has his own plan – to prove his innocence or use his Special Forces skills to disappear.  But deadly secrets, an international security threat and a killer with a vendetta force Ryder to make the ultimate choice – give up his freedom or risk the life of the woman who’s stolen his heart.

MY REVIEW:

Really, what can I say. Ms. Love had me sucked in after the first few pages. How could I not when a gorgeous leading man: Ryder, in jail for a murder he says he didn’t commit, makes you root for him from the start. Bianca, naive and inexperienced, learns a lot about her self and the world is not as black and white as she believes it to be. Ms. Love weaves twists and turns into her story, layering with sub plots.  You think you know “who done it” till you turn the page and she plants another seed of doubt.

Pick up this book, you won’t regret it. It has suspense and romance and for me it made me want to smack a couple characters because they are such horrible people in general. Ms. Love takes the time to develop the personalities of all her characters, large or small. She keeps you engrossed in the story from cover to cover.

The Night Huntress Series by Jeaniene Frost

I was recently introduced to the Night Huntress series by a friend who knows my love of paranormal romance. When I sat down to write about one of the books in the series of six book (with more to follow) I couldn’t decide which one because I loved them all!

The series revolves around Cat (half vampire-half human) and Bones (vampire) and their developing relationship that is complicated by the fact Cat is a vampire hunter. Fate has plans for these two and it is a bumpy ride for them.

Ms. Frost has a fresh view on the “monsters” of the world and integrates them into to her world seamlessly. Her take on modern day myths and use of recognizable locations helps bring you into her world.

Cat and Bones, you will be cheer for them one minute and wanting to strangle one or both of them the next. Ultimately you will be rooting for them.

Heart and Soul by Tess Black Book One of the Solaria Trilogy

Promising new writer leaves you wanting more.

Sometimes a quick short story is what you are looking for and this one is definitely one not to pass up. I visualized the entire story in my head as I read it. Tess Black definitely left me wanting to learn more about the world she has created. Whats not to love about a gorgeous elf? I can’t wait for the next installment of the Solaria Trilogy.

Wicked Nights by Gena Showalter

Wicked Nights is the first book in Gena Showalter’s new Angels of the Dark Series. A spin off from her Lords of the Underworld series. I immensely enjoyed the LOTU series and was eager to give this series a try.

Zacharel is an intriguing character and it is enjoyable watching him grow emotionally. Anna is Ms. Showalter’s typical heroin, one tough cookie. The road to true love is a bumpy one for Zacharel and Annabelle but I found myself rooting for them.

While this story is about romance, do not expect the same steamy love scenes that LOTU contained. Ms. Showalter begins to paint a steamy picture for you but really leaves it to your imagination. I wouldn’t say it falls under the YA category because sex is a serious no-no there but the scenes here are really tame.

There is humor as well as drama rolled into this story and we get enough glimpses of other Angels to make me want to read about them too. I will definitely be reading her next installment.
