Synopsis:

Find the killer, restore your father’s legacy, save the world…all before finals week. Germany, 1945. Nazi leaders scramble to hide stolen wealth from Allied invaders. Among them are members of the German Christian Church, the spiritual arm of Hitler’s empire. When an American soldier stumbles upon the Church’s loot, he learns of the master plan to resurrect the Nazi regime—when the time is right. But the solider dies in action just days before war’s end. The secret, lost. Until now. Virginia, Present Day. A Senator’s home has been consumed by inferno. The nation mourns the loss of a beloved statesman until painful questions are asked. Was it arson? Or the instrument of suicide? The late Senator’s son Max Meyers refuses to believe the FBI’s ruling. Joined by his astute professor Charles Kensington and renegade law enforcer James Russell, Max forsakes posh campus life to learn the truth. A forgotten letter sent by Max’s great-grandfather from the carnage of World War II provides a clue, lighting a trail of decades-old conspiracy across Europe. A lost faction of Nazi religious leaders has risen from the ashes of a failed Reich, prepared to revive a government of tyrants built to last a thousand years. To keep the promise of justice made to his late father, Max must prevent the conspirators from unleashing vengeance on an unsuspecting continent. Is modern Europe’s fate sealed? The first installment of the Max Meyers Adventure series, THE PHOENIX REICH is a fast-paced thriller set against the backdrop of World War II mysteries and the reality of modern-day Nazi conspiracies.

My review:

The story opens with the unimaginable tragedy of young Max Meyers’ family.  His late father, Senator William Meyers, whose name is now on a smear campaign through the nationwide tabloids, desperate to clear his father’s name, Max seeks help from his longtime family friend and professor, Charles Kensington. With the help from Kensington, they enlist private investigator James Russell, who for the right price will use any means necessary to find the truth.  The trio embark on a thrilling adventure to find the truth behind the family tragedy.  I felt an instant connection to Max who for being so young is very intelligent and not afraid to do what it takes to clear his fathers name.  The story is packed with wit, humor, and vivid scenes.  If you love adventure, thrills, suspense and intrigue this is the summer read for you.  This is the first installment of the Max Meyer adventure saga and I can’t wait for the next installment!

Synopsis at Good Reads:

Julia Taylor works as a recruitment consultant for Paranormal Personnel in London. Her days at work seem normal. She sees clients that regularly are looking for work; she searches for new vacancies, updates CVs and visits employers.

Everything is pretty ordinary for her, apart from the fact that Julia is half elf and Paranormal Personnel is not an ordinary recruitment agency at all because all jobless supernatural creatures come to the agency to look for work. Fairies, vampires, witches, hags, wizards, mermaids, elves, giants and trolls, they all need to find employment, and during this economic climate, this seems pretty challenging.

Julia doesn’t want her life to be complicated, but when her day is interrupted by the shapeshifter with the chain saw, she just has to deal with him as she always does. She is normally calm, confident and is not afraid to stand up for herself, but when the meeting with Nathaniel’s Corporation goes not as well as she had hoped, she wants to bury herself under the ground and die.

Then, to make matters worse, Mr. La Caz gets under her skin, lighting up a fire inside her. She accidentally reads his thoughts and learns that he craves her; he wants to suck her dry, but she is convinced that he is not even a vampire.

(Mature New Adult Paranormal Romance novel – contains adult situations, high sexuality, violence, suited for ages 17 and up)

MY REVIEW:

I can’t say it enough that I enjoy it when authors create stories using fairies, vampires, witches, and elves.  Joanna even throws in trolls, giants and mermaids.  But this is no childhood bedtime story.  This story is set in London,  where Julia, a 22-year-old hardworking half human half elf, who runs a paranormal employment agency.  She spends her days interviewing and hiring werewolves, hags, trolls, giants, witches, vampires and more.  Her best friend, Ella, is human who knows nothing about the existence of paranormals.  Which makes it really interesting trying to hide that fact from her BFF, especially since Julia’s exboyfriend, Jasper, is a dark wizard who is currently stalking her.

Julia’s world turns upside down when she meets Nathaniel La Caz, a vampire who is owner of La Caz Corporation, filthy rich, and intoxicated with Julia. He wants her as his lover and won’t stop until he gets what he wants; and he always gets what he wants.  Julia gets pulled into a world of corporate espionage, kidnappings, and dark magic.  In a world where Elves are forbidden to fall in love with Vampires, only time will tell if their love or lust will survive.

Author Highlight: Inez Kelley

Inez Kelley has an exceptional way with words that keeps you laughing and engaged through out her books. While not all her books are paranormal, I thoroughly enjoy everything she writes. The Night Huntress Series by Jeaniene Frost

I was recently introduced to the Night Huntress series by a friend who knows my love of paranormal romance. When I sat down to write about one of the books in the series of six book (with more to follow) I couldn’t decide which one because I loved them all!

The series revolves around Cat (half vampire-half human) and Bones (vampire) and their developing relationship that is complicated by the fact Cat is a vampire hunter. Fate has plans for these two and it is a bumpy ride for them.

Ms. Frost has a fresh view on the “monsters” of the world and integrates them into to her world seamlessly. Her take on modern day myths and use of recognizable locations helps bring you into her world.

Cat and Bones, you will be cheer for them one minute and wanting to strangle one or both of them the next. Ultimately you will be rooting for them.

Book Review: Where the Four Winds Collide by Hildie McQueen

Synopsis:

Adeline Buckley escapes her abusive father only to find herself in a brothel, on a stagecoach to the untamed west and married to a stranger, all in that order. Plotting another escape becomes harder, the more she gets to know her new husband.

Jackson Pruitt didn’t expect a secretive mail order bride to show up the same week cattle wrestlers absconded with a large part of his herd. The bigger surprise was the loveliness of the woman. Why would a beauty like her need to travel so far to marry?

Jackson and Adeline learn that secrets and marriage do not go hand-in-hand when both of their pasts comes knocking and both have to come to grips with the reality, that sometimes trust comes only after you lose it all.

My Review:

The story starts in Widow’s Rock, VA, 1865, with Adeline a 23 year old woman trying to escape a horribly abusive situation with her father and fiance. She ends up in the small town of Four Winds, TX, where she meets Jackson Pruitt, a lonely cattle rancher. As the tale between Adeline and Jackson wove its way into my heart, I was amazed and shocked at the twists and perils they would have to over come to get a chance at happiness together. The choice between truth and lies is something we all struggle with at one point in our lives and we all have to live with the consequences. This is a hard lesson for Adeline to learn; my heart absolutely broke for how much she went through in her young life. I held my breath nearly every page I turned praying she’d get the happiness she so much deserved.

Jackson and Heath Pruitt, now there’s a set of brothers that are nothing less than pure hot Texas cowboys. I could feel the depth of the brothers relationship; a deep bond forged from abandonment from their father and loss of their mother at such a young age. They are truly survivors. The brothers also have all the charm, wit, and handsome ruggedness you crave from a Texan. And then there’s Billy Johnson, the ex-fiance of Adeline, who is one evil SOB. But would he get his just deserts?

This is a complete historical romance that blew me away! I can’t wait for Hildie’s next in the series: Westbound Awakening which is due out October 2013.
